You sometimes can't tell. Often people are calm before they do it. So that is why often when suicide occurs people are like "What!!!:

They may show some symptoms (look it up, because although I know a few, I cant give you a full list), but sometimes they are completely "normal" seeming, and you cant tell at all.

You can't really tell, people will talk about committing suicide and not be close, or can not talk about it and be really close. It really varies per person. For awhile I would talk about it but then I shut up because people were completely misunderstanding my problems and reacting in ways that made them worse. You can certainly tell when someone is depressed if you know them well enough or to some degree in those you know less well if you have enough experience to 'sense' it, but suicide is a separate thing.
